author, journalist, copywriter, executive
Gloria Blakely was born in 1950, in Pennsylvania, United States. She is the daughter of Andrew and Mildred Blakely.
Gloria Blakely studied psychology at Howard University and received a Bachelor's degree in 1972. She also had a graduate study at George Washington University.
In 1976-1998, Gloria Blakely worked as an executive in corporate brand management, including posts at CIGNA Insurance Company and General Mills. In 1998, she became a freelance author and journalist.
Gloria Blakely about her career as a writer: "My path to literary expertise has been unconventional. I became hooked on writing while volunteering African-American history briefs to an employee newsletter during my last year at CIGNA Insurance Company. I then left a twenty-five-year commitment to brand management in corporate America for a career in literature. Starting with contributions to Pathfinders Travel magazine, I have augmented my travel summaries with articles on topics as varied as history, entertainment, health, beauty, technology, architecture, politics, and business. Some were published in Essence, Heart and Soul, Upscale, and Black Diaspora magazines, but most were seen in the Philadelphia Sun newspaper. Additional articles appeared in the Philadelphia Tribune, as well as in local newspapers in Orlando and Los Angeles, including a series on African-American contributions to the twentieth century."
In 2000, Blakely worked as a copywriter and copyeditor. Her first book was completed in 2001, a work-for-hire biography of Danny Glover for Chelsea House written to provide a positive role model for teens. In 2002, she was a contributor to Profiles of Great African Americans and African-American Perpetual Calendar. Gloria Blakely is also a contributor, sometimes under pseudonym Glori Aim, to numerous periodicals, including Benefits Quarterly, Philadelphia Sunday Sun, Philadelphia Tribune, Pathfinders Travel, and Upscale.
