She was the third African-American woman to receive a Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics. She entered Fisk University in 1952 and graduated in 1956 with a degree in secondary mathematics education. She received her Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics in 1962 from the University of Washington (completing her masters in 1960).
She was Professor of mathematics and department chair at the University of Montana (beginning 1995). She was known for many mathematics reason but most of all for being one of the first three black women to get a mathematics award.
