Studied at St. Andrew’s College, Grahamstown, S.A.
Served B. Bechuanaland Police during Matabele War of 1893, and took part in occupation of Matabeleland. Lieut, in Bulawayo Field Force during Matabele Rebellion, 1896. Severely wounded at Maqusa, 22 April.
Appointed Lieut, in Southern Rhodesia Volunteers, October 1899. Served with General Plumer’s Force. Captain and Deputy-Assistant-Adjutant-General on General Plumer’s Staff, March 1900.
Present at Relief of Mafeking, and served with General Plumer until Rhodesian Brigade disbanded, November 1900. Appointed Military Commandant of Bedford, Cape Colony, January 1901. Decorated for services as Deputy-Assistant-Adjutant-General on General Plumer’s Staff in Boer War. Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1900; Southern Rhodesia Volunteers.
