Gohar Fermanyan

Background

Gohar Fermanyan was born on November 20, 1899 in Tiflis, Georgia (present-day Tbilisi, Georgia).

Education

Gohar studied at the Higher Art and Technical Institute (Vhutein) in Saint Petersburg.

Career

Gohar created her works in Art Nouveau style till the end of 1920, when she switched her attention to Realism.

Fermanyan also taught at Yerevan State University and Yerevan Art School.

Her posthumous personal exhibition was held in 1972 in Yerevan.

Achievements

• Gohar Fermanyan gained recognition as a painter of Socialist Realist landscapes, still-lifes and portraits. She was also known as the first Armenian woman, who became a professional painter.
