With the support of Asano and Eiichi Shibusawa, he became director of the Ibaragi Coal Mining Co. After the firm merged with the Iwaki Coal Mining Co., he became its managing director. He operated his own private concern, Abe Shoten, and was a director of the Kanto Fuel Co., occupying an influential position in Japan's coal industry.
