Background
Goichi Abe was born in 1873 in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. He came up to Tokyo with his parents when still young. Soon bereaved of his mother, then father, he led a hard life as a youth.

With the support of Asano and Eiichi Shibusawa, he became director of the Ibaragi Coal Mining Co. After the firm merged with the Iwaki Coal Mining Co., he became its managing director. He operated his own private concern, Abe Shoten, and was a director of the Kanto Fuel Co., occupying an influential position in Japan's coal industry.
