In her late years, she became a nun and was called Tai-Kotaigo or Great Empress Dowager. Because she resided in Higashi Gojo-in, she was called Gojo-no-Kisaki, or Empress at Gojo.
On January 22, 826, Gojo-no-Kisaki gave birth to a child who later became Emperor Montoku, the 55th emperor of Japan. His father was Emperor Ninmyō. After her son was enthroned, Gojo-no-Kisaki was respectfully called Kotai Fujin, or the emperor's mother.
