Göran Sonnevi was born on October 3, 1939, in Lund, Sweden, to Bror August Sven Göransson and Maj Elly Ingeborg (Johansson) Sonnevi.
Sonnevi studied at the University of Lund.
At the age of twenty Sonnevi began to translate poetry, including Ezra Pound’s "Cantos" and various works by Celan, Mandelstam and Enzensberger. After training to be a librarian, Sonnevi was awarded a grant by the Swedish Authors’ Association and began to work as a freelance author.
In 1965, he achieved recognition with his third collection of poetry "ingrepp-modeller" (intervention-models), in particular with the poem "Om kriget i Vietnam" (On the War in Vietnam), which established him as "poet of the new left".

1968Politics is a constant theme in Sonnevi’s work, which encompasses topics as diverse as nature, personal experience, reflections on metaphysical questions and language, science and mathematics. Along with other modernistic poets, Sonnevi aimed to confront social and moral problems head-on. However, his poems are not always clear. In his poetry, Sonnevi asks questions about the role of poetry in modern society and about its connection, or lack of connection, to current events.
Sonnevi is a member of the Swedish Authors’ Union and PEN.
On August 5, 1961, Sonnevi married Kerstin Kronvist. They have a daughter, Anna.
