After arriving in America he established a residence in Los Angeles in 1914, and a few years later, in 1920, began professional practice as a member of the newly organized firm of Johnson, Kaufmann & Coate. In their early works the partners won recognition in the field of high-class residence work, also they designed a number of public buildings, of which St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in Los Angeles was a notable example. Independently Mr. Kaufmann was architect of the new Los Angeles Times Building at First and Spring Streets, the outstanding achievement of his career. Also he designed the Athanaeum at the California Institute of Technology at Pasadena, and the Arrowhead Springs Hotel.
