Gilkey, Gordon Waverly was born on March 10, 1912 in Albany, Oregon, United States. Son of Leonard Ernest and Edna Isabel (Smith) Gilkey.


Bachelor of Science, Albany College, 1933. Master of Fine Arts, University Oregon, 1936. Doctor of Arts (honorary), Lewis and Clark College, 1957.

Doctor in Arts and Humanities (honorary), Oregon State University, 2000.


Member art staff, Stephens College, Missouri, 1939-1942; professor art, head department, Oregon State University, 1947-1964; dean, Oregon State University (School Humanities and Social Sciences), 1963-1973; dean, Oregon State University (College Liberal Arts), 1973-1977; curator prints and drawings, Portland (Oregon) Art Museum, since 1978; professor and printmaker-in-resident, Pacific N.W. College Art, since 1978; special assistant to executive director, Portland Art Museum, 1988-1994. Director International Exc. Print Exhibits, 1956-1978.
