Helped conduct Mount Vernon School for Girls (with brother Jacob), Boston, 1831-1833. Ordained to ministry Presbyterian Church, 1837. Pastor Presbyterian Church, New Rochelle, New York, 1837-1841.
Helped in movement to supply schools with textbooks, libraries and educational journals. With literary department American Tract Society, 1841-1843. A founder girls school, New York City, 1843.
Later took 40 of his pupils and established Spingler Institute for Girls, New York, heavily endowed by Americans and Europeans until 1870. Influenced Matthew Vassar in education of women. Retired to South Natick, Massachusetts, 1870.
