Gosanjo Tenno was born in 1034. His name was Takahito. The second son of Emperor Gosuzaku. His mother was Princess Tei-shi (Yomei-mon-in).

In spite of the opposition of the influential Fujiwara family, he endeavored to readjust the Shoen (manor) system and eradicate evil practices in local administration. Abdicating in favor of Emperor Shirakawa in 1072, he planned to realize his long-cherished desire of reforming administration as J6k6, or ex-emperor. This is considered the first case of Insei, or government by an ex-emperor. He died before realizing his objective.
Takahito-shinnō was the second son of Emperor Go-Suzaku. His mother was Empress Sadako , the third daughter of Emperor Sanjō, making him the first Emperor in 170 years (since Emperor Uda) whose mother was not of Fujiwara descent paternally. His father and mother were grandchildren of Fujiwara no Michinaga maternally. The Empress mother of the future Emperor Go-Sanjō was also known as Tishi, and a Yōmei-mon In (1012–94)
