Background
Gosuzaku Tenno was born in 1009. His name was Atsuyoshi. The third son of Emperor Ichijo. His mother was Shoshi (Akiko) Fujiwara, daughter of Michinaga Fujiwara.

Career
Emperor Goichijo, the elder brother of Emperor Gosuzaku, at first made Prince Atsuaki his heir. Prince Atsuaki，however, gave up his heirship because of pressure of Michinaga. Prince Atsuyoshi then became Crown Prince and ascended the Throne in 1036. He abdicated in 1045, after having installed Prince Takahito (later Emperor Gosanjo) as his heir ap¬parent, against the will of Sessho (Regent) Yorimichi Fujiwara.
