Career

Ordained to ministry Lutheran Church, 1770. Pastor, Philadelphia, 1774-1779, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, 1779-1815. Secretary or president at various times of Ministerium of Pennsylvania.

1st president Franklin College 1787. Studied botany independently and contributed descriptions of over 100 species and varieties flora. Author: Index Flora Lancastriense.

Co-author: English-German and German-English Dictionary, 2 vols., 1812.
