Govind P. Agrawal was born on July 24, 1951, in Kashipur, India. He is a son of Amar Nath, a businessman, and Sushila Agrawal, a homemaker.
Govind Agrawal received a Bachelor of Science in physics degree from the University of Lucknow in 1969. Later he received a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in physics degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, in 1971 and 1974.
Since 1974, Agrawal worked at Ecole Polytechnique, Palaiseau, France, as a research assistant. He worked here until 1976 when he became a research associate at the City University of New York. He was in office until 1980.
After New York, Agrawal moved to Quantel S.A. (present Quantel Laser) company, Les Ulis, France, as a staff scientist, 1980-1981. After his return, he worked at AT&T Bell Laboratories (present Bell Labs), Murray Hill, New Jersey, as a member of technical staff, 1982-1988.
In 1989 Govind P. Agrawal comes to the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York and works here as a professor of optics, since 1989 to the present. He also becomes an honorary professor and conference organizer at South China Normal University in 1999.
