Grace Halsell was born on May 7, 1923, in Lubbock, Texas, the United States, to Ruth & Harry H. Halsell, an American cattle rancher, and also a prolific writer of books about ranching life.
Halsell studied at Texas Tech from 1939 to 1942, at Columbia University from 1943 to 1944, at Texas Christian University from 1945 to 1951, and at the Sorbonne (Paris) from 1957 to 1958.
Halsell was a writer who impersonated women from cultures other than her own and then wrote about her experiences. Her most famous book, the 1969 Soul Sister, described her life and struggles as a black woman in the United States. She also wrote a number of other books about her days as a Navajo woman in Arizona and California during the 1970s, and as a Christian fundamentalist in the 1980s. Some of Halsell’s later works include her 1978 Illegals, in which she outlined her experience of illegally crossing the United States-Mexico border, her 1986 Prophecy and Politics, and her 1991 autobiography titled In Their Shoes.
