A goalkeeper, Cox began his career in the youth team at Division Three side Brentford. He made his professional debut in a 3–1 defeat to Bournemouth on 1 January 1977. He also appeared in the following two games against Colchester United and Crewe Alexandra, conceding seven goals.
With the side leaking goals, Crystal Palace keeper Tony Burns was brought in on loan, which ended Cox"s involvement in the first team in the 1976/77 season.
Due to a shortage of players, Cox was named on the bench for a reserve fixture against Northampton Town shortly afterwards. Cox"s final competitive appearance for the Bees came on 26 September 1977 in a 1–1 draw with Stockport County.
Cox kept goal in Alan Nelmes" testimonial match versus Division One side Chelsea in 1978, conceding 8 goals in a heavy defeat. He departed the club in the summer of 1979.
