This text presents the subject using a systems approach and is therefore a departure from the more commonly employed phyletic approach. Topics covered include classification, cellular and sub-cellular organization, morphology and growth, reproduction and life cycles, evolution, phylogeny, physiology, ecology and the relationship between algae and man. All currently recognized algal divisions are covered, including the Cyanophyceae and the Prochlorophycota.
