A midfielder with an aggressive playing style, Turner was a no nonsense ball winner and runner who had an eye for goal. Turner was a member of the All Whites at the 1982 Fédération internationale de football association World Cup in Spain, where they lost all 3 group games to Scotland, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics and Brazil, but did not play in the finals due to an injury sustained soon after arrival in Spain.
