After six years as an econometrics student at the London School of Economies and Political Science, London, United Kingdom, I joined the Head Office economics staff of a large multinational company at a time when companies in the United Kingdom were beginning tentatively to employ econometric techniques. I spent three rewarding and exciting years in commercial companies, explaining and promoting the use of econometrics, but eventually decided to devote more time to evaluating and developing techniques, and so returned to academia. A constant theme of my research has been the systematic analysis of econometric problems arising in applied work.
The poor performance of static putty-putty production relations for time series data led me to consider more general dynamic models of the putty-clay type. These models necessitated analysis of estimation and testing problems in nonlinear models. I employed methods for testing sequences of hypotheses in discriminating between alternative functional forms for production functions, and for the naturally ordered sequences that occur in time series, especially autoregressive distributed lag models.
The need to be able to compare statistically non-nested models led to work on testing nonnested hypotheses and the role of the encompassing principle in unifying nested and non-nested hypothesis testing.
The relationships between these dif
ferent hypothesis testing problems, and the value of considering them jointly in an overall approach to econometric modelling, has been the focus of much of my recent research. The demonstration of the advantages of starting from general models, and searching for economically meaningful, yet parsimoniously parameterised, models using hypothesis testing, and the need to carefully and extensively evaluate econometric models, rather than simply use econometric methods to confirm economic theories, has characterised my research. Areas of application include aggregate production and consumer behaviour, money demand, relative price variability and inflation.
