He attended the common schools, Angelica Academy, and Alfred University. Then he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1877, and practiced in Pike.

He was Clerk of the Town of Pike from 1878 to 1881. Supervisor of the Town of Pike from 1883 to 1887. A member of the New York State Assembly (Wyoming Company) in 1888 and 1889.
And a member of the New York State Senate (30th Doctorate) from 1890 to 1893, sitting in the 113th, 114th, 115th and 116th New York State Legislatures.
