Greg Egan started his career when he published his first work in 1983. He specialises in hard science fiction stories with mathematical and quantum ontology themes, including the nature of consciousness. Other themes include genetics, simulated reality, posthumanism, mind uploading, sexuality, artificial intelligence, and the superiority of rational naturalism to religion. He often deals with complex technical material, like new physics and epistemology
Greg Egan currently works and lives in Perth, Australia. However, Egan is a famously reclusive author when it comes to public appearances, he doesn't attend science fiction conventions, doesn't sign books and there are no photos available of him on the web.

Australian writer Greg Egan is best known as the author of science fiction short stories and novels, who won different awards and has been shortlisted for the Hugo Awards three times. His major works include such books as Quarantine, Diaspora, Luminous, Teranesia, Incandescence, Dichronauts, Schild's Ladder, and Orthogonal trilogy. He is also a contributor of short stories to magazines, including Interzone, Aphelion, Analog, Eidolon, and Isaac Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine.
Egan's work Teranesia was named the winner of the 2000 Ditmar Award for best novel, but Egan declined the award.
