Career
Born in Cloghan, County, Hughes first excelled at Gaelic football in his youth. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of nineteen when he first linked up with the senior team He made his senior debut in the 1958.
Hughes represented the inter-provincial team on a number of occasions, winning three Railway Cup medals.
Throughout his inter-county career, Hughes made 36 championship appearances foreign His retirement came following the conclusion of the 1971 championship.
In retirement from playing Hughes became involved in team management and coaching. At inter-county level he guided the under-21 team to success before later taking charge of the senior team
Hughes also trained the Saint senior football team
