(Paring a novel into a two-hour film is an arduous task fo...)
Paring a novel into a two-hour film is an arduous task for even the best screenwriters and directors. Often the resulting movies are far removed from the novel, sometimes to the point of being unrecognizable. Stanley Kubrick’s adaptations have consistently been among the best Hollywood has to offer. Kubrick’s film adaptations of three novels — Lolita, The Shining and Full Metal Jacket — are analyzed in this work. The primary focus is on the alterations in the characters and narrative structure, with additional attention to style, scope, pace, mood and meaning. Kubrick’s adaptations simplify, impose a new visuality, reduce violence, and render the moral slant more conventional. (Chip Stone is a male nurse who works in a psychiatric hos...)
Chip Stone is a male nurse who works in a psychiatric hospital and has almost as many behavioral issues as the residents he cares for. These include DeWitt, a cultural critic gone bonkers; Valentine, who snacks on light bulbs; Nolan, who contends (correctly) that he's a character in a book; and Glinda Moon, an anorexic witch. As the violence at his workplace intensifies--Code Green!--the confused Stone sets out on a desperate but comical odyssey to find his estranged wife...and himself. His wanderings take him through a twisted netherworld where he meets old friends and new enemies, discovering that the line between the sane and the not-so-sane is more gossamer than even he had suspected.

(Who would’ve thought that doomsday could be so much fun? ...)
Who would’ve thought that doomsday could be so much fun? Though the characters in Greg Jenkins’s new novel A Face in the Sky may not always enjoy what happens, readers certainly will. An apocalyptic tale with literary flair, A Face in the Sky delivers a leavening dose of dark, irreverent humor. Among the characters are a befuddled business professor, a retired (and roguish) major league baseball player, an adult film actress, and a playwright who aspires to being a terrorist. In unique ways, each of them must confront what may be the end of the world.
