Career
Went to South Australia, 1876, active representative member of the United Builders Labourers’ Society of that State. President of the Trade and Labour Council and of the United Political Labour Party of South Australia on several occasions. Elected in the labour interest for the Legislative Council of South Australia, 1894.
By South Australia as one of its Senators in the first Commonwealth Parliament of Australia, 1901. Was returned last Federal election for the Senate by that State. On assembling of first Federal Parliament was elected leader of the Labour Party in the Senate, was re-elected in the second.
Vice-President of the Commonwealth Executive Council, and Leader of the Government in the Senate, 1904. Vice-President Executive Council, Australia, since 1908.
