Air Force pilot, Reese Air Force Base, Texas, 1986. T-38A instructor pilot 54 Flying Training Squadron, 1986-1989. F-15E Eagle fighter pilot 335th Fighter Squadron, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina, 1990-1993.

Deployed to Al Kharj, Saudi Arabia, flying 34 combat missions in support of Operation Desert Storm, 1990. Deployed to Saudi Arabia, flew an additional 27 combat missions in support of Operation Southern Watch, 1992. Test pilot, flew and tested F-15C/E, Newfoundland-15B and T-38A/B aircraft 445th Flight Test Squadron, Edwards Air Force Base, California, 1994—1997.

Key member, "tiger teams" during the investigation into the cause of the Columbia accident in 2003.

Astronaut representative to the External Tank (ET)foam impact test team, eventually proved that ET foam debris on ascent could critically damage the shuttle's leading edge thermal protection system. Deputy chief, Astronaut Safety Branch, 2004. Crew representative supporting the design and testingof National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Crew Exploration Vehicle, 2005.

Pilot, mission to deliver the Japanese Logistics Module and the Canadian Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator to the International Space Station (ISS), STS-123 Mission (Endeavour), 2008.
