Greta Schiller was born on December 21, 1954, in Detroit, Michigan, United States. She is a daughter of Jane (Carlson) Schiller and Ray Homer Schiller.
Greta received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Greta's career began in 1984 with the theatrical release and PBS broadcast of her first feature documentary "Before Stonewall". The movie premiered in the Berlin International Film Festival and was showcased in over 75 film festivals worldwide. Also, the movie marked the beginning of Greta's collaboration with Andrea Weiss, who was the research director on "Before Stonewall".
In 1984, Schiller co-founded Jezebel Productions, a company, located in New York City and London, that focuses on educational films, based on real people. Later, Greta, together with Andrea Weiss, produced and directed a trilogy of films about women in jazz, namely "International Sweethearts of Rhythm", "Tiny and Ruby: Hell Divin’ Women" and "Maxine Sullivan: Love to be in Love".
In 1994, with funds from Channel Four in England and ITVS/PBS, Greta wrote and directed a short fiction film "Woman Of The Wolf". Later, Greta’s highly estimated documentary, "Paris Was a Woman", premiered at the London and Berlin Film Festivals. The movie went on to win many awards at international film festivals. Moreover, it was released theatrically in the United States, Germany, Spain and Great Britain, breaking house records in several cities. The film was broadcast in 16 countries.
In 1998, Greta directed "The Man Who Drove With Mandela" and in 2000, she produced "Escape To Life: The Erika and Klaus Mann Story" movie. In 2002, Greta directed "I Live At Ground Zero", the movie, that offers a child’s eye view on September 11th. Her movie "No Dinosaurs in Heaven", directed in 2010, deals with the problem of creationists, posing as science teachers across the United States in order to introduce anti-science ideas into the science classroom and threaten the separation of church and state.
Greta's most recent work is "The Marion Lake Story" (2014), an uplifting environmental film, which follows a grass-roots community effort to restore a dying lake.

In 1986, Greta won the First Place Award at the American Film Festival, Prize of the Public at the Creteil Film des Femmes, France, Prize of the International Jury, at the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, Germany, and the Jury Prize at Leipzig's Documentary Film Festival, all for "International Sweethearts of Rhythm" documentary.
In 1988, she was honored with the Silver Plaque Award at Chicago International Film Festival, Prize of the Public at the Creteil Film des Femmes, France, and others, all for "Tiny & Ruby: Hell Divin Women" movie.
In 1991, Schiller received an honorable mention at the American Film and Video Festival, for "Maxine Sullivan: Love To Be In Love" movie.
In 1995, Greta received the Golden Angel Award at Berlin International Film Festival, the Best Documentary Award at the Creteil Women’s Film Festival, France, and the Best Historical Film Award in Valladolid, Spain, all for "Paris Was a Woman" movie.
During her career, Schiller received many other awards. For example, her "Before Stonewall: The Making of a Gay and Lesbian Community" movie earned her an award at the Torino International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, as well as a Grand Jury Nomination at the Sundance Film Festival. Also, in 1989, "Tiny & Ruby: Hell Divin Women" movie won her the Teddy Award at the Berlin film festival. In 1999, Greta received another Teddy for the Best Documentary, "The Man Who Drove with Mandela".
Moreover, Greta was honored with the Best Documentary title at the Newport International Film Festival and the Milan International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival.
Greta is the first recipient of the US/UK Fulbright Arts Fellowship in Film. Also, she received grants from different organizations, including New York Foundation for the Arts, London Production Fund, European Media Fund, the Arts Council of England and many others. Lately, in 2015-2016, she was awarded an Outreach Fellowship from the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society.
