Protestant by religion. In 1921, emigrated with his parents to Estonia. Finished high school at Narva.
Moved to Revel where he was praised for his talent as a painter. Moved to Paris, 1931. Became attracted to Orthodoxy.
Orthodox monk, 1948. One of the best known and most prolific 20th century icon painters.
