1906 qualified as uyezd teacher.
In his youth worked as shepherd. Moved to Moscow and worked as cobbler, baker and mailman. From 1909 teacher; 1907 first work printed.
From 1908 associate, then chairman, Surikov Literature and Music Circle (1921 merged into All-Russian Social of Peasant Writers). 1912 founded Druzhba (Friendship) Cooperative Publ House, whose members in 1915-1916 published journal Drug naroda. 1922-1927 chairman, All-Russian Social of Peasant Writers.
1928 abandoned lit work and returned to teaching. Compiled four collections of revol and folk songs.
Communist Party member from 1918.
