1884 graduate Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, Saint St. Petersburg University.
1884-1887 explored the Bukhara, Altay, Pamir, Kashgar and Tyan'- Shan’ mountains. 1889-1890 led major expedition of Russian Geographical Social to explore the Eastern Tyan’-Shan’, Dzungaria, Bey-Shan’, Nanshan and Gobi. During this expedition established that the Bey-Shan’ range links the Tyan’-Shan’ and Nanshan systems
In Tyan’-Shan’ discovered the Turfan (Lukchun) depression, one of the world’s deepest. Compiled extensive zoological and botanical collections. 1903 explored Western Mongolia and Tuva.
1908 the Far East; 1911 Turkmenia. 1912 the Transcaucasus. 1914 Siberia and Tuva.
1921-1930 lecturer, Leningrad University, Geographical Institute and Institute of Living Oriental Languages, where he read a course on the study of Asian countries. Wrote over 200 works on his travels, including numerous monographs containing detailed information on the geography, geology, anthropology, ethnography, botany, zoology and history of the areas explored.
