Professor, Leningrad and Saratov University. Headed Group for Study of 18th-Century Literature at Pushkin House in Leningrad (Institute of Russian Literature, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences). One of the first Soviet lit historians to study Russian lit of 18th and early 19th Centuries.
Wrote a number of works on Pushkin and Gogol’ notable for their thorough lit and historical analysis. Expressed very clearly his conception of Russian realism. Investigated the inner laws of lit development, where each successive school solves the contradictions of the previous period.
Although all his works were based on profound knowledge of 18th-Century social life, in the 1930's he was subjected to Party criticism for applying formalistic methods in lit research and in 1949 was arrested by State Security organs.
