1916 graduate Medical Faculty, Moscow University.
After graduate joined Army Medical Corps. 1922-1924 detached to Otolaryngological Clinic, Leningrad Military Medical Academy for specialist training. From 1924 head, Otolaryngological Department, 1st Moscow Communist Hospital (now Burdenko Main Military Hospital).
1935 defended doctor’s thesis on osteophony, which contained new concepts in the physiology of hearing. 1941 professor, Chair of Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases, Leningrad Military Medical Academy. From 1942 Chief Otolaryngologist, Soviet Army.
Did major research on aviation medical. Made original studies of vestibular training for pilots, pilot selection and paratroop training. Developed new techniques for the treatment of ear, nose and throat wounds and shell-shock.
Designed several ear-protectors (a helmet-liner, a pilot’s head-band, etc) and otolaryngological instruments (a needle for puncturing the maxillary sinus, a needle for suturing the palatine arch and a simplified diaphanoscope for examining the frontal sinus).
