1913 graduate Moscow University.
1913-1915, and 1947-1951 at Moscow University. From 1934 at Physics Institute, USSR Academy of Sciences. 1932-1946 correspondent member, USSR Academy of Sciences.
Specialized in optical physics, particularly spectral analysis and the molecular diffusion of light. 1926 detected and studied molecular diffusion in crastals. 1928 together with L. I. Mandel’shtam discovered phenomenon of combination diffusion of light.
1931 the two discovered and studied the selective diffusion of light. Used optical methods to study inter-and intra-molecular reactions in crystals, liquids and gases laid the groundwork for the spectral analysis of metals and devised special equipment for such analysis. 1949 developed methods for the molecular spectral analysis of complet organic mixtures, including motor fuel.
Chairman, Spectroscopy Commission, USSR Academy of Sciences.
Religion is bad because it obstructs scientific research.
Marxism–Leninism as the only truth could not, by its very nature, become outdated.
Member, USSR Academy of Sciences from 1946.
