Myasoyedov was born in Pankovo, Oryol Oblast, Russian Federation (former Tula Governorate, Russian Empire), on April 19, 1834. Grigoriy Myasoyedov's father belonged to the minor gentry, and also wrote a book The Statistical Economic Review of the Southern Part of Tula Guberniya.
Grigoriy Myasoyedov started his education at the Gymnasium in Oryol. However, he didn't complete his studies there and enrolled at the Imperial Academy of Arts (now Ilya Repin St. Petersburg State Academic Institute for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture). At the academy, he studied under the guidance of Timofey Neff and Alexey Tarasovich Markov between 1853 and 1862. He received a scholarship from the Academy, which allowed him to go on study trips to Paris, Rome, Florence and Spain. Upon his return to Russia in 1870, he became an Academician.
Myasoyedov was one of the founders of the Association of Travelling Art Exhibitions (Peredvizhniki) and remained its faithful supporter for the rest of his life. In 1876 the painter settled on a farm near Kharkiv and began to create portrayals of peasant life.
In 1883 Grigoriy Myasoyedov modeled for Ivan the Terrible in Ilya Repin's painting Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan. In 1889 the artist became an owner of a large manor house in Poltava, with a park, ponds and gardens. While living there, he designed the curtain and sets for the local theater. Myasoyedov founded an art school in 1894. Around that time he also wrote a book about gardening.
In spite of his working on a variety of topics, Myasoyedov always had a special affection for religious painting. He was planning a triptych of "Holy Russia" but suddenly died.
Grigoriy Myasoyedov was one of the most outstanding artists of the late 19th and early 20th century. In 1862, he received a gold medal for his painting "The Flight of Grigory Otrepyev from the Inn" (a scene from Boris Godunov by Pushkin). He had several exhibitions at major galleries and museums, including the Tretyakov Gallery and the State Russian Museum.

Grigoriy Myasoyedov was a member of the Moscow Society of Lovers of the Arts since 1862, and a founding member of the Society of Travelling Art Exhibitions (Peredvizhniki) in 1870. Myasoyedov became a full member of the Imperial Academy of Arts (present-day Ilya Repin St. Petersburg State Academic Institute for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture) in 1893.
Between 1861 and 1881 Grigoriy Myasoyedov was married to the pianist Ekaterina Krivtsova. The couple separated when she was pregnant with her son, Ivan, as Myasoyedov suspected that he was not his child. He remarried then the artist Kseniya Ivanova. For several years, Ivan was under the care of Alexander Kiselyov, Grigoriy Myasoyedov's friend and colleague.
