Attended Polytechnic Institute of Utrecht. Attended Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Auburn, New York, 1855-1859. Honorary Doctor of Divinity, Rutgers University, 1875.
Came to the United States, 1862 settled in Wisconsin, then Brooklyn. Ordained to ministry Dutch Reformed Church, 1859-1898, sent as missionary to Nagasaki, Japan, 1859, baptized 1st two converts, 1866. Established a small school teaching English by means of Bible.
Head of school which laid foundations for Imperial University, Yedo (now Tokyo), Japan, 1869.
Iwakura mission sent to American and Europe partly as result of his suggestion, 1871-1873. Translated or supervised translation for Japanese Government of Code Napoleon, the consts. of many Western states, numerous Western laws, legal documents, treatises on law.
Decorated by Emperor of Japan. Preached, taught in theological school which later became part of the Meiji Gauin.
Lecturer at government school for nobles.
Helped prepare a hymn book, other religious literature. Assisted in translating Bible into Japanese.
