One of the best known representatives of the human rights movement in Latvia. First conflict with the authorities in 1961 for communicating with Latvian emigres. Spent 15 years in the Gulag.
Distributed samizdat. Also accused of translating into Latvian, and distributing the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact. Arrested, September 1983.
Received a 7 year camp sentence and subsequent 5 years in exile. Released, 1 February 1988 follow-
ing demonstrations in Riga. about ballet personalities.
