Gumpe Yamamuro was born in 1872 in Okayama Prefecture, Japan.
Gumpe Yamamuro began his career as an apprentice in a printing plant in Tokyo (1886). The following year was baptized a Christian and entered Doshisha College, where he was much influenced by Yuzuru Niijima.
After graduating joined the Japan Salvation Army and helped to solidify the organization and was active in social work including the rehabilitation of ex-convicts. Reached the rank of lieutenant general in the Salvation Army before he died. He is the author of "Happiness of the Common People".
