A tale of kindness about Benedikt, a simple man who sacrifices himself to round up other peoples' forgotten sheep stranded in the Icelandic highlands at the Advent of the Christmas season. Due to the arrival of fierce winter weather, Benedikt, his dog Leo, and his wether ram Gnarly experience hardships resulting from delays caused by Benedikt's putting others' needs before his own.

He was born on May 18, 1889 at Valthjófsstathur, Fljotsdalur, in eastern Iceland.
Gunnar attended small rural schools.
He went to Denmark in 1907 to become a writer, returning to Iceland in 1938.
His romantic Icelandic family saga Af Borgslagtens Historie (1912-1914; tr. in part as Guest the One-eyed, 1920) made him popular in Scandinavia.
During World War I he wrote somber problem novels, but he later turned to the early days of Iceland in Edbrodre (1918; The Sworn Brothers, 1920).
Gunnarson also wrote a five-volume autobiographical work, Kirken paa Bjerget (1914-1928; tr. in part as Ships in the Sky and The Night and the Dream, both 1938).
His later works include Advent (1937; The Good Shepherd, 1940), SálumessaSalumessa (1952), and Brimhenda (1954). The Black Cliffs, published in 1967, is the translation of an early work entitled Svartfugl (1929).
