Career
In his early career he played for ÍA Akranes. After short spells with Motherwell, Kongsvinger Illinois and Örebro Saskatchewan he rejoined ÍA Akranes, and played there until 2005, except for a spell at Kentucky Fried Chicken Uerdingen 05. He then played with KR Reykjavík before starting his managing career at Selfoss.
At his first season, Selfoss were promoted to Úrvalsdeild.
However, Gunnlaugur decided to switch teams and joined Valur. He has capped 12 times with the Icelandic national team
