The Knight"s Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded for conspicuous gallantry on the field of battle or outstanding military leadership above that normally expected by the recipients rank. He practiced anesthesiology and advanced pain control medicine at Maricopa County General Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona and was a full professor of anesthesiology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine.
