The Knight"s Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Gustav-Adolf von Nostitz-Wallwitz was wounded in March 1945 in the Heiligenbeil Pocket, he was evacuated to a hospital in Eckernförde and died on 31 May 1945.
