(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Mark Twain once famously said "there was but one solitary thing about the past worth remembering, and that was the fact that it is past and can't be restored." Well, over recent years, The British Library, working with Microsoft has embarked on an ambitious programme to digitise its collection of 19th century books. There are now 65,000 titles available (that's an incredible 25 million pages) of material ranging from works by famous names such as Dickens, Trollope and Hardy as well as many forgotten literary gems , all of which can now be printed on demand and purchased right here on Amazon. Further information on The British Library and its digitisation programme can be found on The British Library website.

(Excerpt from Atlas and Epitome of Otology This excellent...)
Excerpt from Atlas and Epitome of Otology This excellent little volume represents the work of a well-known and distinguished teacher, being character istic of the thorough and comprehensive methods of German authors and instructors. The translator aims to give an accurate but liberal expression of the author's ideas, rather than a literal exposition of the German text. Some few additions and omissions were deemed necessary better to elucidate the English text, but are in no sense considered subversive of the author's views. Gustav Bruhl was born on May 31, 1826 in the village of Herdorf, Rhenish Prussia.
Gustav's father, owner of mines and smelting works, was able to provide for him a classical education at the gymnasia of Siegen, Münster-Eifel, and Trier. Following upon this, Gustav studied medicine, philosophy, and history at the universities of Munich, Halle, and Berlin.
The so-called "emigration fever" of the revolutionary period of 1848-49 and the overcrowded condition of the medical profession at home induced the young man to lend a willing ear to the alluring letters of his uncle John Gerlach Brühl, who had settled in Missouri.
Gustav came to the United States in 1848, and was on his way to Missouri, when a period of low water on the Ohio compelled him to stop over in Cincinnati. There a relative on the maternal side persuaded him to tarry longer, and a very successful beginning as a medical practitioner soon encouraged him to settle down and cast in his lot with the thriving city of Cincinnati.
For several years he was practising physician at St. Mary's Hospital, and also lectured on diseases of the throat and laryngoscopy in Miami Medical College, Cincinnati.
He wrote scientific articles for medical journals, and was an active participant in the numerous scientific, educational, historical, and philosophical societies that sprung up about him. Subsequently he became a member of the council of the newly organized University of Cincinnati. As a publicspirited citizen of untiring energy he advocated reforms in education and politics. He stood for Tilden in 1876 and was one of the presidential electors in that memorable conflict.
In spite of his public service and heavy professional duties, Bruhl found time for an avocation. This was the study of American archeology. For this he made extensive trips to Mexico, Central and South America, as well as the far western sections of the United States, and embodied the results of his studies in lectures and books. Intimately connected with his archeological and ethnographical studies were Bruhl's writings in German verse.
A collection of his poems was published in Cincinnati under the title Poesien des Urwalds in 1871, and a second volume was prepared about 1878. There appeared also: Charlotte: Eine Episode aus der Colonialgeschichte Louisianas (Cincinnati, 1883).
Gustav Bruhl was one of the founders of the Peter Claver Society for the education of African-American children, and a member of the board of examiners of the public schools. His following publications, written in German, are noteworthy: Die Culturv"lker Alt-Amerikas (Benziger Brothers, New York, Cincinnati, St. Louis, 1875-87); Aztlan-Chicomoztoc. Eine ethnologische Studie (same publishers, 1879); Zwischen Alaska und Feuerland. Bilder aus der Neuen Welt (A. Ascher & Company, Berlin, 1896). The last is a popular work descriptive of the natural wonders of the Far West, in Arizona, New Mexico, California, Wyoming, and Alaska, giving special attention to the American Indian in his home, and passing on to a portrayal of the land of the Montezumas and the Incas and of conditions then existing in the South American republics.

Gustav Bruhl was nominated by the Democratic party for the position of state treasurer, but was not elected, though he won the distinction of running ahead of his ticket.
He was a passionate lover of nature in her grand moods, and these he photographed in such lyrics as: "Auf dem Corcovado, " "Im Thale von Jucay, " "Am See von Atitlan, " "In den Anden"; or he would embody some Indian legend in heroic or elegiac stanzas, as: "Die Heldin des Amazon, " "Winona (eine Dakota Sage), " "Tupac-Amaru. " Still more numerous were his poetical dedications to the German pioneers in American colonial history, such as: "Pilgerzug der Mährischen Brüder, " "Das Feuerschiff, " "Die Frau des Pioneers, " "Regina" (the child kidnapped by Indians identified by her mother's singing a German hymn), "Vinum, linum textrinum" (the motto of the Germantown settlers), "Leisler, " "Christian Schell, " "Capt. Hiester, " "Steuben, " "De Kalb, " "Herckheimer, " etc. All of these lyrics and ballads first appeared in the volumes of the Cincinnati monthly Der Deutsche Pionier, 1869-87, published to record the history of German pioneers in the United States. Of this journal Brühl was editor during 1869-70, after which he continued to contribute over the signature Kara Giorg (a Serbian pen-name, meaning Black George).
Bruhl was a member of the Peter Claver Society.
A photograph of the author reveals a massive frame and large features radiating virility, intelligence, and energy. A long, shaggy beard and the professional man's spectacles cannot altogether conceal gentler aspects of expression.
Bruhl was married to Margarete Reis, by whom he had two sons and one daughter.
