He was educated at Merchant Taylors" and Pembroke College, Oxford and ordained priest in 1896.

After a Curacy at Leyton (1895-1899) and Hastings (1899–1901), he briefly held the post of vice-principal at Street Aidan"s College, Birkenhead. He held incumbencies at Birkenhead (1902) and Bradford (1907–1919) before elevation to the Episcopate in 1919. After four years in Cornwall as Bishop of Truro he was translated to Chelmsford in 1923 and six years later to Manchester.
From 1910 to 1914 he was editor of The Churchman jointly with Doctor Dawson Dawson-Walker, professor of Biblical Exegesis at Durham University.
He retired in 1947 and died six years later.
