Guy Swanson argues that modern psychology has placed undue emphasis on the roles that psychological defenses play in neurosis, thereby obscuring their true nature and origins. He maintains that defenses are a routine and effective part of ordinary social behaviour.

In "Religion and Regime: A Sociological Account of the Reformation," Guy Swanson offers an explanation of why some societies became Protestant while others remained Catholic. By contrast, Max Weber, in "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism," described Protestantism itself and looked for its consequences. He did little to explain its rise or spread. Professor Swanson's thesis of political agendas and national influence on religion is as relevant today as when the book was first published.
