Studied at Royal High School, Edinburgh. Wimbledon College.
Joined 1st Battalion L.N.L. Regiment, 1886. Appointed to 4th Punjab Infantry, 1888. Served with this regiment as Wing Officer in Hazara Expedition, 1888 (action of Kotkai) (medaZ. with clasp).
Appointed to “Q.O.” Corps of Guides (cavalry), 1890. Served with above regiment as Squadron Commander in Chitral Expedition, 1895 (slightly woundeu by sword-cut, despatches, medal with clasp, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order). Also North-west Frontier Expedition, 1897-1898.
Present at operations at Malakand, Mahmund, and Buneyrwal (severely wounded at Malakand by sword-cut, despatches, 2 clasps, Brevet of Major). Decorated for services in Chitral Expedition, 1895. Companion of the Distinguished Service Order; Deputy-Assistant-Adjutant-General Sirhind Brigade “Q.O.” Corps of Guides; Indian Army.
