On a remote Outer Hebridean island, Len Wallace is custodian of a nature reserve. He lives by his own code of ethics, whereas Mark, the son of wealthy landowners, a brain-damaged boy in a man's body, has no code. When a camera crew arrives on the island to survey for 'an experiment in desert island settlement', the locals are deeply alarmed. The presence of so many outsiders begins to eat away at the fragile community, and after a young girl is murdered, tension reaches dangerous levels. She hitchhiked her way around, travelling from Skye to Chamonix and many places in between, with all her possessions on her back, although these amounted to little more than a rope and a sleeping bag.When the money ran out, she worked as a forester, went winkle-picking on the Isle of Skye, acted as the helmsman of a schooner, and did a stint as an artist's model. And always there were the mountains, drawing her away from a "proper" job.Throughout this unique story, there are acutely observed accounts of mountaineering exploits as Moffat tackles the toughest climbs and goes on to become Britain's leading female climber—and the first woman to qualify as a mountain guide.

Gwen Moffat is a British climber and writer

Career

Moffat was a free spirit who loved and lived the Bohemian lifestyle through the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, making a living from climbing, and becoming the first female British guide. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, she was closely associated with the Royal Air Force Mountain Rescue Service in North Wales and helped train many young airmen, once she had agreed to wear boots! She described her life in her classic autobiography Space Below My Feet. She subsequently went on to write detective fiction, in particular the Mission Pink series featuring Melinda Pink, a middle aged magistrate and climber.
