GWYNNE, H. A. was born in 1866 in Kilvey. Son of R. Gwynne[;of 856 Kilvey.
Studied at Swansea Grammar School.
Acted as correspondent for the Times in the Balkans. Became Reuter’s correspondent in Rouinania, 1893. Went to Ashanti for Reuter’s Agency, 1895.
Accompanied Lord Kitchener’s Expedition to Dongola in 1896 as Reuter’s chief war correspondent, in which capacity he followed the operations of the Turkish-Greek war in 1897, the expedition to Berber in the same year.
Went to Peking in January 1898, remaining there till May 1899, whence he sailed directly to South Africa, organised Reuter’s war service for the Boer Avar, followed Lord Methuen’s operations, present at Magersfontein. He joined Lord Roberts on his arrival, followed his operations to the capture of Pretoria, and then took part in many of the minor operations till the end of the war.
Returned England November 1902. Sailed again for South Africa same month to accompany Mr.
Chamberlain on his visit to South Africa.
Went to Belgrade on occasion of murder of King and Queen. Visited Macedonia during disturbances. Foreign Director of Reuter’s Agency, 1904.
