He studied architecture in St. Louis in the office of the late George I. Barnett.
He established practice for himself, and became one of the organizers of the St. Louis Chapter, A. I. A. Mr Kirchner’s largest and most important works in the city were the Cotton Exchange Building, built in 1882 at the south-west comer of Main and Walnut Streets (razed in 1940, and the Burlington Building, also he is said to have planned at least sixty schools in St. Louis. Other buildings he designed were the Mining Exchange in Denver, 1892; City Hall at Las Vegas, N. M., and Court Houses at Mora and Santa Fe, N. M.
