Background
MARRIOTT, H. P. Fitzgerald was born on July 20, 1865. Son of late William Marriott, Doctor of Medicine, Fellow of the Linnean Society, et cetera, of Men tone, formerly of 102nd Royal Madras Fusiliers, and Margaret, daughter of late Gerald Fitzgerald of Coolanowle and Moate,Queen's County, and of Saint James’s Square, Bath.
Education
Studied at Ascham School, Bournemouth. Private tutors. Canada, 1886-1888S. Studied Pompeii and neighbourhood, 1889-1895.
Career
Went to West Africa, travelled inland in Gold Coast to study natives, 1895 - 96. Visited Sierra Leone, and studied Grand Canary and its volcanic abysses. Went to Cape Town, 1900.
Joined 18th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry Sharpshooters as Lieutenant.
Went to Bulawayo, enlisted in Dublin Volunteer Imperial Yeomanry. Saw active service in Cape Colony (medal with three bars and clasp).
