Background

Hachijo-in Princess was born in 1137. She was the daughter of Emperor Toba, she was granted the title of the mother of Emperor Nijo.Her father was Emperor Toba, her mother - Bifuku-mon-in.

Career

In 1138, she was proclaimed an Imperial princess, in 1157, she entered priesthood, assuming the Buddhist name of Kongo-kan.

Was conferred the title of Hachijo-in in 1161.A favorite of his father, she was granted a large tract of land and wielded great power in the court. Even Kanezane Kujo (Fujiwara), the minister of Right, eagerly sought her assistance. Her territory, called Hachijo-in Goryo, was later turned over to Emperor Godaigo.
