Hachiro Kiyokawa studied Kendo (Japanese fencing) under Shusaku Chiba and Confucianism under Gonsai Asaka.
Hachiro Kiyokawa set up a private school. Later went to Kansai district as penance for an accidental sin. Traveled widely in Shikoku and Kyushu, attempting to overthrow the feudal government. Later joined the same government in planning to set up the Shinchogumi troop, which consisted of lordless warriors. When the Namamugi Incident (in whicn a retainer of Satsuma Clan killed an Englishman) occurred (1863), Hachiro became indignant and planned to attack foreigners in Edo, but was assissinated by Yosaburo Sasaki.
